Recently, I had a conversation where I felt a shift.
My voice tightened.
Emotion started to rise.
And almost immediately…there was less space for me to speak.
My body knew the pattern:
Pull back.
Don’t express.
Disappear.
There was a time I would have followed that all the way through
Quiet.
Retreating.
Crying later–alone.
Believing, at some level, that my voice didn’t have a place.
But this time, something was different
I saw it–right there, in the moment.
And even though I still felt the emotion…
I didn’t go all the way back.
I paused.
Just enough to notice:
This matters to me.
I don’t want to disappear here.
Nothing big changed in the conversation.
But something shifted inside of me.
Because the pattern didn’t complete.
And that matters more than you think.
Because the real shift doesn’t happen in what you say next.
It happens in the moment you don’t leave yourself.
This is how capacity grows.
Not in never getting triggered…
but in noticing when you start to disappear–
and choosing, even slightly,
to stay.
