Are You Protecting Yourself From a Future That Hasn’t Happened?

I woke up feeling unusually tender this morning–a little weepy and spiritually sensitive.

In the past, I might have wondered what was wrong or tried to move myself out of it. Today, I recognized it as part of my rhythm and let myself be there.

It made me think about how differently I experience uncertainty now.

Worrying about the future can look a lot like being responsible. Maybe you know what it’s like to be living today while your mind is already preparing for tomorrow.

What if something goes wrong?
What if someone I love makes a choice I can’t fix?
What if I’m not prepared?

Thinking ahead can feel responsible.

But sometimes there’s a hidden pattern underneath it:

If I can anticipate what might hurt, maybe I can protect myself from the pain.

So we rehearse conversations that haven’t happened. Imagine outcomes we don’t want. Prepare ourselves for things that may never come.

And suddenly, we’re experiencing tomorrow’s fear today.

What if you didn’t have to?

Not because nothing difficult will happen, but because you’re developing the capacity to meet discomfort when it actually comes.

I’ve been thinking about this as I’ve studied King David’s life. His story wasn’t protected from pain, consequences, uncertainty, or opposition.

Again and again, what stands out is his willingness to turn his heart back toward God.

Maybe peace isn’t knowing you’ll be spared from difficult tomorrows.

Maybe it’s knowing you don’t have to live them before they arrive.

You can pay attention. Make wise choices. Ask God what is yours to do.

And then live today.

Tomorrow will have its own grace.

Reflection Invitation

What future discomfort are you already experiencing today?

What would change if could trust that, if it happens, God will meet you there?
