Sometimes growth takes longer–and costs more–than we ever expect.
My husband and I have wanted to replace the pathway from our back porch to our hangar since we moved in four years ago. This spring, it finally felt like the right time. We got bids–and were stunned at the cost.
Then came another challenge: swampy pools of water that gather after rainstorms. The more we explored, the more we realized that the drainage work would fall to us.
I’ll admit–I was frustrated. I just wanted to pay someone and have it done! But I trusted Steve’s judgment, and together we started digging trenches, installing a French drain, and even replanted a 50-foot flower bed. Over three and a half months, we easily logged 100 hours of hard work.
Then came the quote for the cement walkway and rock wall… even higher than expected. Yet, seeing the progress we had already made, we were committed to bringing the project full circle–not just for beauty, but to halt puddles of water during rainstorms. My husband stayed meticulously involved to ensure the work would last, rain or shine.
If we had known the full scope and cost at the start, we would have waited. But looking at the before-and-after pictures –and the foundation we’ve created–the transformation is undeniable.

This process reminds me of the wisdom from Lead from Freedom. Just like our yard project:
- Growth takes root first.
- Structure is essential for long-term success.
- Patience, persistence, and intentional action are non-negotiable.
The tools we’ve been cultivating over the past six weeks–nervous system regulation, mind mastery, and alignment with God’s truth–lay the groundwork for lasting transformation. The “before” may feel messy or overwhelming, but with consistency, the fruits of efforts begin to show–and you’re building a foundation that will last.
Next week, we’ll explore the full vision of what’s possible. Even before the flowers are planted, having the vision of the final result keeps us motivated and intentional.
This is a reminder that your growth is unfolding too–even if the full bloom isn’t here yet, the foundation you’ve built is strong, and the beauty is already taking shape in your life.
