A few years ago, I was visiting with a client who expressed such a fear: the fear that one or more of her adult children would leave the faith of their youth.

What followed was a remarkable conversation about value, where she learned that her worth is independent of her children’s choices. This revelation prepared her to navigate the troubled waters when one of her adult children did indeed leave the faith.

Today, she shares, “Just because your children are grown doesn’t mean they don’t need you—they just need you in a different way! Because I learned about my value, I am able to be their friend and sounding board and try not to offer advice unless they ask!”

Understanding that our value does not increase or decrease based on our children’s choices is critical to being more effective in our parenting and embracing our God-given opportunities as women.
