Susan Jeffers, PhD, author of Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, says:
In all my life I have never heard a mother call out to her child as he or she goes off to school, “Take a lot of risk today, Darling. No, she is likely to convey, “Be careful, Darling.”
She goes on to say that this message carries a double message to the child: the world is really dangerous and you won’t be able to handle it.
What mom is really saying, of course, is that if something happens to you, I won’t be able to handle it. She is passing on her lack of trust that she will be able to handle whatever comes her way.
Having confidence that you can handle whatever comes your way is a powerful way to trust yourself.
What do YOU believe you will do if something hard comes your way?
It matters!
